About Hopkinton, Iowa
A community rich in history, education, and small-town charm in Delaware County.
Our History & Heritage
Hopkinton was laid out in 1850 in the southeast corner of Delaware County and was officially incorporated on March 3, 1874. The town was named after Hopkinton, Massachusetts, reflecting the New England heritage of many early settlers, including Henry Carter, W.P. Cunningham, Leroy Jackson, and Dr. W.L. Roberts—visionary pioneers who founded both the town and its college.
The town's most significant contribution to Iowa history is Lenox College, which began asBowen Collegiate Institute in 1856 when construction of Old Main started. The college was chartered and opened in fall 1858, making it one of Iowa's earliest institutions of higher education. Classes began in 1859. The name changed to Lenox Collegiate Institute in October 1864, and finally to Lenox Collegein 1884 after a generous donation from New York philanthropist James Lenox. As the oldest Presbyterian college in Iowa, Lenox College educated generations of students until its closure in 1944. Today, its beautifully preserved campus buildings comprise the Delaware County Historical Museum Complex, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
One of the most significant landmarks is the Civil War Monument, dedicated on November 17, 1865—one of the first Civil War monuments erected in Iowa. This solemn memorial honors the 91 students and faculty from Lenox College who served in the Union Army during the Civil War, with 27 making the ultimate sacrifice.
